Frugal Things I Did Last Week

Keeping track of the "frugal things" I do each week really encourages me to keep pushing and saving our money for what really matters!  The original inspiration came from The Prudent Homemaker.  This is something I have been doing for quite a while on my first blog.  Here are some of the frugal things we did last week to save money:

We attended a fun birthday party where our friend's twins turned 1!  I talked with their aunt and found out that they did not have anything in their room with their names on it.  I made them each a canvas with their name on it.  They were 11 x 14 canvases that my mother-in-law gave me when we were visiting.  These were fun to make!  Eli enjoyed helping me make them and helped with each step.  He even asked for his own canvas to make them a gift.  He was insistent that I also give them the canvas that he made!  For Eli's canvas I used Cricut Plantin' Schoolbook Cartridge and cut the letters at 4.5.  For some odd reason I had to cut the boat at 14 and used Cricut Ruby Red Vinyl.  For Lexi's canvas I used the Cricut Cartridge, Songbird and cut the letters at 4.5 and the bird at 5.5.

I baked Sourdough Cinnamon Raisin Bread.

I passed along some hand me downs to two different friends.  I really appreciate hand me downs so I try to pass things along to others.

I made homemade Kefir using a powdered Kefir starter that my mom gave me.  I also used a coupon to order Kefir Grains.  (I have used kefir grains in the past but accidentally dropped a glass jar that they were in.)

I used my Crock Pot to make Venison Stew.  My brother was kind enough to shoot a deer for us this past fall.

I made a felt snowman kit for Eli using felt I had in my stash.  I think this would also make a cute gift for someone.

I received a free packet of Chard Seeds from Renee's Garden.  I have never grown chard and honestly can't remember if I have ever eaten it but we will be eating it sometime this year.  I bet the hubby is beyond excited about this possibility!  I wonder if I could grow it in our landscaping or in a large container?  I grew a variety of flowers and vegetables from Renee's Garden last year and look forward to growing more this upcoming year.

I made homemade Greek Yogurt.  You can make yogurt in the Crockpot but I have had better success using my Excalibur Dehydrator.  I also regularly use it to raise bread.

My grandmother gave me 3 cards: 2 birthday cards and a Valentine's Day card that I will give to Elijah.

We went on a short day trip to meet up with some friends so we packed a cooler of drinks.  We stopped at a gas station and I redeemed a coupon for a free flavored water.  Our friends treated us to dinner which was nice.

I read a free book on my kindle.

I made homemade laundry detergent tabs.  I actually splurged and purchased these Tovolo Ice Trays just for this project.  So far this new recipe works great.

I sewed a dozen cloth wipes using fabric scraps.  (If you sew crib sheets you will cut out 4 squares in each of the corners.  These are the perfect size for cloth wipes!)

We attended our first week of Financial Peace University at a nearby church.

I started this new blog instead of paying to add more space to my wordpress blog.

What frugal things did you do last week?

  2. --I hosted a House Party SodaStream FizzFootball party on Super Bowl Sunday. Its a Company that showcases different products and recruits people to host parties using different products in their own homes to get guests to buy the product. The host gets to keep the product. I got a free Soda Stream Source machine, which retails for $99.99. I was also sent two bottles of Cola and Diet Cola to sample along with cups and party favors for my guests. The only requirement was to talk up the party online on the House Party Website. I uploaded a Group picture on my House Party page. I've had a House Party before using Bare Minerals skin care. It's a nice machine. We do drink soda/pop at my house. I try to buy on sale. The benefit of a Soda Stream machine is that there is no can or plastic bottle waste. Now that I have this machine, I won't have to buy soda pop for awhile. Due to last weekends snowstorm, The only people who came to my party was me, my husband and son. Everyone else canceled :(
--watched Downton Abbey free on PBS.com

--Downloaded 4 free books onto my iPad through the Kindle app

--got my hair cut and highlighted free by my Mom who's a licensed hairdresser

--last weekend we stayed home mainly in part due to poor weather & driving conditions
--Did NOT eat out and made all food from scratch using our Crockpots, all of which were gifts given to us at my Bridal shower 15 years ago

August Reads

None Like Him: 10 Ways God is Different From Us by Jen Wilkin :  I'm quickly becoming quite the fan of Mrs. Jen Wilkin.  I've been working through her 1 Peter Bible Study this summer and I absolutely loved reading through this book on the attributes of God.  I found myself reminded of so many things and almost felt a sense of relief as I contemplated what God is like.  This book was a delight to read.  I love that there is now a book on God's attributes written especially for women.  Pure awesomeness!  I highly recommend this book for both new believers and those with years of experience.  I also think it would make a great book club book. The Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian: This book is one that I have been wanting to read for years and I just never got around to it.  I am so glad that I finally took the time to read and pray through this book!  What better gift could I give my husband the past month than to spend time earnestly praying for him through a

Our First Tent Camping Experience

Earlier in June we embarked on a new adventure.  TENT CAMPING!   Two summers ago we enjoyed a wonderful time camping in a borrowed pop-up camper but this was our first experience sleeping in a tent as a family.  We loaded up our very full van and headed to Land Between the Lakes in Western Kentucky for a new adventure.  It was wonderful.   One of the neatest aspects of our trip was the fact that Nina & Poppy Steve (Brandon's parents) were able to meet up with us!  (They live a good 10 hours away from us so this was a real treat.)  We had so much spending time with them.  We stayed at  Hillman Ferry Campground  and I would definitely stay there again.   Hillman Ferry Campground has a lovely beach with an area roped off for swimming.  The kids enjoyed playing in the sand and I even took them swimming in the lake.  I have been swimming many times in a lake but I think this was my children's first real time swimming in a lake.  (The closest lake to us no longer

This Week's Goals

We have been so blessed to fill our August with such fun family memories. In the picture above we enjoyed a day trip to the Columbus Zoo where we got to get up close with some kangaroos!   August has been so busy for our family that I've neglected to share my goals the past few weeks.  We've been squeezing in lots of summer fun as we transition back to school days.  I also began teaching fall piano lessons.  Here are a few of my goals for this upcoming week.      This Week's Goals Marriage, Mothering, & Family 1.  Eli is playing flag football this fall!  I'm excited to attend his game on Saturday. 2.  Eva has a therapy appointment this week.  I am so thankful for all of the incredible progress that she has made over the past year.   3.  Take both children to the park to play this week.   Homemaking 4.  Work on plans for Disney.  I need to work on our packing list and make some reservations.  I also need to purchase a number of items before we lea
